It would be good to enhance the Add Instance Data tool so that it can tunnel into cells.
The lack of this capability is a big problem for BIM workflows. BIM is predicated on a progressive building in of LOD information. Spatial containment and classification/attribute tagging is also built on a progressive/iterative process. The problem is that the spatial containment usually happens before classfication. This means that you will always need to be able to add/modify information tagged onto a nested element without having to drop the cell and re-build it.
A door, window, curtain wall, cladding panel or WC block would have many nested objects. It is unreasonable to expect that the all information be inserted into the cell before it is placed at scheme, detailed, even const doc stages and not expect any changes.
Using graphic groups is not the solution. No insertion point or other means to replace.
PS: Selecting the nested elements in the Element Info panel tree should highlight only the selected element not all the elements in the group.
